Has anybody ever used any type of paint to coat an aluminum gas tank? Aluminum tanks corrode when exposed to water, and little pinhole are formed. Is there a product you can paint of to prevent this from happening? (or atleast slow it down?)

My gut feeling is that if the tank is below deck and it's integrity is at all questionable then replace it. The thing I've seen that is most common is to ensure that there is space between the tank and the bottom of the bilge so that water can drain through. My boats tank is aluminum and raised off the hull by about 2". It sits on a piece of poly coated 3/4" ply and heavy duty rubber weather stripping for isolation. I had it out and tested recently. It is still in perfect shape after 18 years.
Have a look at my resto thread, there are pictures of the way it's mounted.
Hi fellow boat restorers, I am new to this forum today. Glad I found it. I just got a 1985 Bayliner Capri 18' about two weeks ago and my brother and I have been working on it everyday. We found out today after cleaning the gas tank (it sat for 3 years) that it has a leak. So we tore up the floor which was partly rotten and got the tank out. Now I am trying to find another one to put back and cant seem to find the right size on the net anywhere. Does any one know where to look. Thanks for NW Florida
