I would like to know the year of my 4 hp Lightwin Evinrude motor I bought it years ago, new. I haven't used it in the past 10 years or so. I have also forgotten the fuel to oil ratio,as well and need to know this. The serial number as I can make it out is 4206SC69582. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I just about finished building myself a 14 foot flat bottom boat ( in the paint stage) and plan on getting back to fishing now that I am retired.
Re: 4 hp Evinrude Lightwin motor, gas to oil ratio???
pretty sure the real real old ones are 25 to 1 - I think in the 50's it went to 40 to 1 and probably modern ones are 50 to 1, so - if it is fairly modern you are probably OK running at 40 to 1 until you find out for sure. I have a 68, 3hp Evinrude that is mixed 40 to 1.

Earlier than 1964 were 24:1 or 20:1. All after 1964 are 50:1. Your '68 should be running 50:1.
I don't think Evinrude made any 4HP Lightwins before 1964.
Re: 4 hp Evinrude Lightwin motor, gas to oil ratio???
As a personal preference, the Lightwin 4s still used babbit bearings on the connecting rods up to the late 1970s, and as such I like to run them a little on the fat side for oil... I've seen a lot of holed blocks in those little motors due to tossed connecting rods...

Re: 4 hp Evinrude Lightwin motor, gas to oil ratio???
Thank you all for the info. I know it was bought after 69, as that was the year I moved to my current address, it was some time after that I bought the 4 hp. motor. Just not sure when. But I will go with the 50-1 ratio.
Thanks again, hiramabuf (Frank) ...PS Just finished the final paint coat of Fire Red on the 14 footer I built.
Re: 4 hp Evinrude Lightwin motor, gas to oil ratio???
not to hijack the thread, but my owners manual for my 68 says mix at 40 to 1; so - why do you say 50 to 1. Has oil changed? Did OMC change the recommended spec?
But with plain bearings in there a bit more oil would not go amiss.
that is very very interesting. for now I think I'll still run the 40 to1, but I also have a newer merc that is 50 to 1, so it would really make the mixing a lot easier if it was all the same ratio.

40:1 would be fine in both. A little extra oil doesn't hurt anything.
