I recently purchased a boat with a 1977 evinrude 70 hp model # 70773S. The problem is that corrosion has locked up the shaft that the steering cable moves in order for the engine to turn. I need to get the whole assembly out and am most likely going to need replace the steering cable for it has come loose at the end of the shaft. Anyways, i was wondering if anybody on here knew of any tricks or ways to solve this problem as well as the parts i will need to replace the steering on the boat. The helm is good by the way, just the steering cable and the shaft assembly that slides through the engine. Thanks.
PB Blaster, a block of wood, hammer, then a rod to drive it all the way thru. then you need to clean the rust out of the tilt tube. i recommend one of these and a drill. http://www.iboats.com/T_R_Marine_Ste...-view_id.40162

Agree, beat it out the best way you can. Some of them can be extremely hard to get out...even impossible. Also, on many boats you have to lift the motor off the transom to make enough room to get it out. If that is the case, so be it.
Learn from it. Removing that cable and cleaning/relubricating it BEFORE it starts to rust is a regular preventative maintenance item.
