Hi everybody,
I am new here and have a question about a Johnson-70 Engine from 1977.
Want to buy one but during testing the motor was obviously running on 2 cylinders only at idle.
I remember that someone has told me this is normal. And when accelerating, all 3 cylinders are working.. IS THAT TRUE??
Or is my engine demaged??

Thank you very much!!!!

seems like you would not be getting any oil( lubrication) into that idel cylinder the whole time you ideled , and thus would score the cylinder walls.....

one of the reasons i rebuilt my carbs on a motor I hadnt heard run ( 1988 70 hp Evinrude), before i tried to start her up , was guys said that if one carb wasnt working you wont be getting fuel and oil into that cylinder and you could ruin it and not notice because the motor would sound ok running on only two cylinders!!

good luck

that is not true. it runs on 3 all the time. could be clogged low speed jet in that carb, or low compression.

BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.
