Need to ID a Johnson 40

Just Bought a 70 Glassmaster with a Johnson 40.
Needs a little work but I need to start with the engine.
The Model # is J40ELC0
The Serial # is G7076195
Could any of you good folks tell me what I have? Having a little trouble getting it started, but I need to know what I have to find the service manuals. I'm going to start with the carbs and their lines. Any other pointers would be more than welcome. Thanks for any help I can get.

The "CO" in the model number indicates that engine to be a 1985 model. That is the letter "O", not the number "0".

Don't know what the "L" is, bu you have:

1985 4oHP electric start.

Other than the year you probably figured all that out.

Can you provide a little more info?
Is it hard to start, but then runs OK after started, or starts and runs bad, or just won't start? The more info you can give, the better.

The first thing to look at is not the fuel system. I tend to check the compression first, then the ignition. Both are free to do. Tearing into the carbs will cost money in gaskets, etc.

I've only had the boat a week and it's been raining like the devil for the past 5 days so I'm Just starting on the project. The motor will fire very briefly then quit. It looks as though the chokes are staying closed. They will only open at all if the throttle is set about 2/3 open or greater. I'm leaning more towards the control linkage, but it looks adjusted all the way out. I Opened the throttle control housing last night and all seems in good order but the starting lever seems to have little effect on the choke release. Wrong Track?
