Re: So what is it??

Here are the model, liter,HP,RPM and gear ratio specs for engine in that range and year. 5800 will not hurt it:D

Mercury XR2 2.0L 150 5500-6000 2.00/1
Mercury XR4 2.4L 150 5300-5800 1.78/1
Mercury XR6 2.5L 150 5000-5600 1.87/1

Re: So what is it??

Fbullet, what about a 150 Optimax, '98? I'm still looking for the right prop, I've gone through 2 props so far and can't get it above 4500rpm, should be over 5000 I think? It's on an 18' Maxum bowrider, around low 2000# I would think.

Thanks!

PS - sorry for the hijack, but figured the first question was answered, and this eliminates another thread. :D

Mercury Optimax 3.0L 200/225 5000-5750 1.75/1

Re: So what is it??

Hey FB, I swapped out the prop and am now at 5300RPM WOT, trimmed up. Sound about right?

The engine checked out compression wise on all cylinders.

Re: So what is it??

You want to prop toward the max upper rpm range so when you add extra people and ski the rpms will still be in the suggested operating range
