advice for 1995 johnson 88 special broken ring

I have a 1995 johnson 88 special with one broke ring, slightly dinged piston, and slightly scored cylinder wall. The mechanic says I'll pay half the money for a new motor for the repair and won't be guaranteed the repair will last very long. Not sure how many hours on the motor. Its used for 2 weeks of hard fishing and skiing a year and maybe 10 day trips of fishing. Bought it brand new. Any advice as to my best options. Rebuild piston? Install rebuilt power head. Buy new e-tech? Help please. The mechanic suggests the new motor.

You could buy a manual and do it yourself for a lot less than this person is going to charge you. The average cost to rebuild seems to be around $1500-$2000 for a shop to do it. Look at the price of a new motor, it's a LOT more than twice that price.

Whether or not you need a new engine or power head depends on how badly the cylinder was scored. If the scoring can be honed out, install a new piston and rings in that jug, and new rings on the other and go for it. But that recommendation is based on a "do it yourself" scenario.

I would want to know what caused the ring to break. You don't want to put the money in the motor have it happen again. As far as the comment from the mechanic about the motor not being gauranteed to last very long, well I think I would look for one that has a little more confidence in his work. Sounds to me like he is setting you up for failure. Find a new mechanic and get his opinion. If what you describe is the only problem then that motor should be able to be repaired to run a long time with good workmanship and good maintainence on your part.
