When I prime the fuel line, gas sprays out of the fuel pump where the cork gasket is.

This motor is brand new to me - 1968 9.5 evinrude.

The motor also needs to have the fuel bulb pumped or it will die out.

I disassembled the fuel pump and did the blow test and could not blow into either port - I know you're supposed to be able to pass air through the intake port. I may have reassembled it wrong - or maybe it's always been like that....I did not test the pump with the blow test prior to taking it apart.

I found some great info on the fuel pump here and the assembly directions - but thought I would throw this out there to see if all 3 of these symptoms can help someone make an assessment.

I'm sure I've read here at Iboats there is not repair kit available for the 9.5. I'm not sure this is a bad thing though. You should just get a new pump and have the peace of mind that it won't be giving you any thing to worry about. You say yours leaks, have you tried tightening the screws? Best of luck. Rick.

It is very common for those things to leak. It may be the cork gasket is shot, or the plastic cover is cracked (common). Both are available from your Evinrude dealer. Either one will cause it to die out because it is sucking air through the leak instead of sucking gas from the tank.

However, you took the pump apart. So, there is no telling how bad you screwed that up.

F R - you nailed it. Upon closer inspection the filter housing was indeed cracked which is why (I suspect) the fuel was shooting out near the cork gasket.

I ordered the Sierra replacement fuel pump. Upon further research, I learned that this is not a perfect fit and needs to be modified to work in the tight quarters under the hood of the 9.5.

I will research the options for installing the Sierra fuel pump and hope it solves the issue.

Please do. I have a 9.5 with a pump that I'm sure isn't omc but I don't know who made it. Rather than the brass thumb wheel with a flat screwdriver slot it has a small allen wrench bolt. I'm interested in how yours is going to fit. Rick.

Hopefully I will get advice on this question rather than starting a new thread.

I ordered and received my new Siera fuel pump.

Just for kicks, I tired blowing into the inlet of the pump and could not. I tried really hard, almost popping my ear drums and heard a really short duck call sound - I suppose the diaphram vibrating.

Should I be worried that the pump does not pass the blow test?

there is not a blow test, it has a diaphram that pumps fuel. filters are blow thru.

The duck call sound was air passing through the check valves...which it should.

So if you blow on a fuel pump it makes a Duck sound. Wonder what sound a duck would make? Boy am I off topic! Rick.

I am basing the blow test on the last statement on the popular reduild site as described below:

Fuel Pump Test

(23) You SHOULD be able to blow thru the pump by blowing into inlet (A). You should NOT be able to blow thru the pump by blowing into outlet (C).

If the pump does not pass this test, disassemble pump and check the parts that must be in an exact position or must be in an exact relationship to other parts.

Thought I would update the thread to help those in the future with the same issue.

The Sierra 18-7350 Fuel Pump DOES FIT WITHOUTH modification or disassembly and reassembly. Mine fit, with the arrow on the pump pointing up with out any mods at all.

I pumped the bulb - which went soft previously after a short time and it quickly firmed up and stayed firm. Motor started up and purred like a kitten. I hope I don't jinx myself now!

I had it in a tub and she ran just fine.

I took some pics and video and will post them later on. I am anxious to test it on the lake.

Well i rebuilt my carb with the help of this forum last week. And i took apart my fuel pump to try to clean it out. And i must of messed something up because now i have to continually prime the bulb to get my 1971 9.5 evinrude sportwin to run. So i guess i should buy one of these as well? Or should i just try taking my current fuel pump apart and putting it back together again? I dont know how old it is? Honestly, I don't try to rebuild the pumps anymore. I figure a new one for 50 bucks will probably last at least 20 years, since the original lasted at least that long.

I was also looking at either replacing or rebuilding a new fuel pump. This link is the OMC instructions on how to put it back together. Maybe it can help you.

Glad your new pump fit. Your motor looks to be in real good condition. Have you checked compression. I'd like to know what it is. Rick.
