Got a 225 Evinrude that I need some assistance with.

I want to say the powerhead is from a year before the ficht system but the lower unit is from a 99 225.
I say this because of the fuel pump and also because it is carb'd

The problem is that the motor is only turning around 3500rpm after the boat gets on plane were it should be turning 5000+rpm.

Done the same thing with 2 different props on it.

I have checked all the cylinders for spark and thats good
I took off the carb cover and it is shooting fuel into the carbs when I rev it up.

The boat will only rev to around 5000rpm out of the water.

What do I need to check on it next? I believe it is possibly a fuel problem.

It has a VRO pump on it with the oil injection disconnected and the fuel is now premixed in the tank.

Thanks

Clec, start your own thread, you'll never get help jumping on someone elses thread. You have a simple problem.

running it up without a load can lead to a runaway and throw a rod real easy.
Lucky for you it runs like crap;)

Try to find the model number, look for a quarter sized silver disk between the heads.

More info is needed, is this a new to you engine?
did it ever run good?
Did you spark GAP test it? 7/16th inch gap, good blue spark.
Have the carbs been rebuilt with new carb kits?
Is the ignition advance set up properly?

Read this and see if it helps.

Re: Evinrude 225 Problem

His motor is a 90* V6 looper, and the above timing link would not apply. The linkages are totally different.
Just quickly check these two things: (Free to check!!!)
1. With engine OFF, advance the throttle to maximum and check for full opening of the throttle butterflies on ALL 6 carbs, and make sure ALL 6 are moving exactly the same at the same time. All 6 should be totally synchronized. Do this by looking down the carb bores with the air silencer off.
2. There is a small roller on top of the carb linkage that couples the carb opening movement with the timer base movement under the flywheel. That roller has a bad habit of breaking/cracking. When it breaks, it "sheds" the outer layer of rubberized plastic, leaving just the spindle. It then looks as if it is OK, but it is not. If it is 1/4" in diameter, it has probably cracked. It should be about 3/8" in diameter, and it is about 1" long. It is held on its shaft with a tiny o-ring on top.

If either of these items is bad, fix them, and then you must do a complete proper link and sync. BUY the OMC service manual, too.
