Hello, I have 420 hours on this engine and it runs fine. Good compression.
I have always done the normal matainence. At these hours should I replace
the head gaskets as a precaution?
It is run in salt water all of the time. I flush it everytime with Salt away.
If they should be replaced should I have them planed at a machine shop?
Should they go on dry or have some kind of sealant?
Anything else I should do please let know.
I did a search on this topic and could not find what I was looking for.
Thanks in advanced.

Re: Replacing Head gaskets

My advise is leave it alone if it's not broke. It sounds like you maintain your motor and they are made to last a lifetime and are not maintanance items.

How often do you change the head gaskets on your car?

Re: Replacing Head gaskets

head gaskets are much easier to change in outboards, cuz of easy access to them.

However, it is not nessecary to change them unless you see unburnt fuel leaking down the side of the motor. You will notice less power, since water is mixing with the fuel in the cylinder, and the fuel is not burning all the way..

Check the outside of the gasket where the heads meet the block. If you find that salt is leaching from the gasket it's time to change........both of them.
