Merc 175 EFI lower unit question

I'm replacing the impeller on my 175 EFI and the service manual says there is a slinger above the water pump housing around the shaft. There was not one on mine nor does the drawing show one. My question is, does water fill the area above the lower unit where the drive shaft is located or does this area stay dry. There is no mention of this in the service manual. Service manual is vague in a lot of areas.

Re: Merc 175 EFI lower unit question

Hi there Beastrider, sorry but this is not an answer to your question. I have been trawling the internet looking for the same answer as you.

I am just about to replace the impeller in my 200hp EFI and I have noticed the same thing, no sign of the centrifugal slinger on the shaft and no sign of it in any of the drawings. The only mention of it is in the service manual where it says to remove and replace it. (it's not in any of the service manual drawings either)

Did you ever find out if it is actually supposed to be there on our engines? Did you just go ahead and put the pump back together without it?

Cheers

Re: Merc 175 EFI lower unit question

So I put the unit back together without the centrifugal slinger and everything seems to be working very well. Have about 2.0 psi water pressure at idle revs.
