i have a early to mid 70s 70hp outboard motor that stalls everytime i put it in gear (in the water it stalls, but fine on muffs) im confused on what it is can anyone help?

You need to do a "link 'n' synch" adjustment procedure by the book. . .setting idle speed while in the water and in gear.

agree, maybe also contaminated carbs.

would bad gas do this? also how can you tell what year it is?

Find serial number on the transom plate and go here:
