Yamaha 40 kill switch starting problem?

I've been fighting with this issue since last year- my Yamaha 40 TLRC on my Skiff takes forever to start, esp when cold. Ignitian switch and starter seem fine, but the kill switch seems t be the root of the problem. If I pull the lanyard and jostle it around onto the switch while turning the key, eventually I hit a sweet spot and the engine fires up fine. And after engine is warm, this proceedure usually isn't needed. I'm hoping to figure out a fix and would greatly appreciate any advice.
Thanks!

Re: Yamaha 40 kill switch starting problem?

your describing a failed emergency stop switch, test it.
a simple test is to simply unplug the white wire to it and see if it now starts normally.
those switches can get moisture/corrosion in them and as the switch voltage is about 190 volts any contamination can short out the kill circuit and preclude ing system working.
all the CDI sees is a path to ground and will discharge to it instead of through the ign coil primary circuits.
