Default Just bought a used boat, now what?

I just bought a used 98 nitro 700LX. The owner had a compression check on the engine that was fine. Now that I have it what else should I get looked at before I take it out? Also, I have heard conflicting stories about winterization, some say it must be done and put away and others say I can run it year around as long as I store the engine in a vertical position so it drains, who is right? (FYI I live very close to cincinnati, so it gets pretty cold)? Any quick tips on maintenance? This is my first boat! bhuston@fuse.net

Store it with the engine down..Its self draining. Like was said replace the impeller (water pump) every two or three years. Change the lube in the lower unit every year, along with the sparkplugs. And get a manual..worth the money. If your going to let it sit for awhile..Learn how to fog the engine.

As Norman stated, the lower unit must be drained and checked, unless you are certain the pevious owner did it.The problem is that the lower unit can develope a leak, and take on water. Then, when you pull the boat out, this water will freze, and destroy it. But i am from Florida,so I know nothing about winterizing.

Dear Newowner,Congratz. You are now the proud owner of a hole in the water that you throw money into.Don' misunderstand, it's one of the, if not THE bestes toy you'll ever own. That's pretty much what this board's all about.Guys and their toys. We're hard core. While you're out there gettin' that manual, ya might as well pick up Chapman's "Piloting,Seamanship and Small Boat Handling". That way you'll know what them red an' green lights mean.Welcome to the wonderful world of boating.c/6hooty
