I justed started applying primer to my trailer. Didn't require much prep as it was pretty clean.

The question is: when applying the primer, should I be thinking in terms of "coats" or "coverage" ? Meaning: once you have the surface covered with primer, should I stop and move on to the next step ? Or should I be applying more than one coat of the primer ? I'm thinking that more than one coat of primer would be over kill. Am I wrong ?

You'll want to get a coat of paint on that primer sooner, rather than later. Primer does nothing to shield the metal from moisture, and will rust very quickly.

If you sprayed the primer thin it may need more than a coat. Sink your finger nail in it and see how thick is the dried coat.
If you applied heavy primer with roller/brush one coat should be more than enough giving a good base for the finish to cling to.
