Hey all, i just got given a 1970 tri-hull galaxie, made by Galaxie of Texas...im trying to find any info i can on these boats...i have searched many forums, and all i find is unanswered posts...i cant even find pics of one on google...does this mean i found a rare boat?? or does it mean i have a POS that no one wants....the only reason the guy got rid of the boat is that the trim hydraulic lines rotted and need replaced, and it needs a set of seats....its a cool little boat with a big azz motor on it...it has an 85 merc OB that was bored out to a 119, so im told, but after some advise on here i dont know what it is now...i seen the receipt for $1500 of motor rebuilding, so i guess its possible...ive posted on a couple other boat forums trying to get info....if no one here knows anything can someone point me to a good place to look? thanks in advance......

A fellow I used to work with said his father started Galaxie in their garage at home. I can't remember offhand where in Texas the lived. I believe he said they moved it to a small building because of the fumes. Anyway, the business never really got rolling and facing losses, his dad sold it to someone just as it was going belly up. This was told to me about 20 years ago - the son would be around 51 y.o.a. now. The families name was Swearingen.

Guess I'm not sure what the concern is. I have a 1970 Evinrude Explorer that is pretty rare anymore and has a limited following but I'm not letting that slow me up in terms of restoration.

Your's, like mine, is a fiberglass boat. They're pretty basic. It's near impossible to find "correct" parts but I'm not letting that stop me. I cut out and replaced the flooring in mine and utilized the center dead space under the original floor as a storage locker.

I've replaced all of the instruments and added a some for grins. To do that, I had to alter the appearance of the original layout (for the better IMHO). I've replaced all of the cockpit switches and was lucky to find the original non-marine vendor who still makes them (at half the price of anything West Marine was offering). I had to go with white switches instead of black because the vendor no longer offers black. I could have painted them black but in the long run the paint would have inevitably worn off and looked tacky so I got over it and they've grown on me.

I'm going with Decko-Dot vinyl flooring rather than indoor/outdoor carpeting and will install a new sliding bimini top so it can move to the rear exposing the cockpit (far forward helm) to the open air or forward exposing the rear seats.

If you're having trouble finding anyone who's familiar with your boat, then it's unlikely once restored, someone is going to look at it and say "it ain't right". I'd go for the restoration and do what you want to do with it using any type of parts you can find that strike your fancy.

Good luck with your Galaxie. I've had fun with mine thus far!! Check it out:
