I have a 1981 Johnson 150 HP. Here is the problem:
When I'm checking the timing and the RPMs increase the starboard side stops firing and the strobing stops on the timing light but when the motor is just idling, everything is fine. What could be the problem?

Re: Please help with problem.

I believe your motor has two power packs one for each side of the motor.. switch the packs and if the problem follows the pack it needs changing if the problem stays on that same side then we will go from there ;)

Are you sure that the second power pack that you used is good? I would take Splitshot's advice and see what the result is.

Trace the black with yellow striped kill wire from the ailing powerpack to the large red engine harness plug; you likely have a short to ground in that wire. It runs through the 4 wire amphenol plug between the powerpack and the ignition coils.
