Disconnect the shift rod, under the carb port side, remove the 4 bolts the hold it to the mid section, drop the unit, remove the 2 bolts that hold the impeller cup on and change the impeller, then rev the process

Hello Laddies

I'm looking at doing this on my 1990 8 HP Merc. I see where the shift rod is connected to under the carb , but there appears to be no screws , no cotter pins viewable to get the rod away from the part on the motor . Is there a trick I'm missing ?

Thanks in advance

XJ

The clip on the outside holds the shift rod in place. If you look carefully you'll notice it's slotted at the forward end.

With a screwdriver or other suitable implement, pry the clip upwards and as soon as it pivots off the part it locks into, you'll be able to pull it outwards and away from the shift linkage.

This frees up the shift rod so you can pull the lower unit.

One note, the little "shift cam" in the gearbox is threaded and the shift rod screws into it; be sure you don't spin the shift rod around while you're working on the lower unit, because that'll mess up your shift adjustment.

Thanks kindly for the help . I was able to do all that and drop the leg and put it all back together . Issue LOL . No water peeing out of the pee hole now. I was doing the carb and a few other things at the same time , is it possible for the impeller to go in the wrong way , you know they way the impeller blades bend slightly when u put it in the cup ? When I fired it ,I seemed to have water pissing out from where the shift rod comes out from the lower leg . In that area. The picture below is the old one , looking from above when it goes into the leg , is that correct , in that direction ?

Thanks for any assistance .

Update : Well after a long afternoon I took a break ,had a beer and a rest . Went and pulled the leg off again and I think while installing it the first time , while twisting the bottom leg to align the drive shaft I accidentally offset the tube where the water pushes to the top . I'm saying this in hopes that if someone else does this job here , to be real careful about aligning those two tubes together upon assembly of the leg . Now back to my carb woes .
