Hello. After starting to collect a graveyard of "fixer-upper" outboards, I finally picked up a small, Mercury 3.5 4-stroke (07) to have something to help move my small craft around some of the local lakes. I have yet to try it out. My questions are as follows:
1. Is the 3.5 useful/usable for my 14 foot vessel? I know its not much power and I don't expect to move fast. My boat is rated to 675 lbs total or 3 (150 lb) passengers. I will be carrying a trolling motor/battery, tackle, and cooler as well.
2. Is the 3.5 enough to combat wind on a 14ft vessel?
3. Is the 3.5 enough to combat the current of a small river?
3. Is the 3.5 much more efficient than my Endura 40?
4. What are some of the advantages (if any) and disadvantages might I face as I try to make this small kicker work? Are there any suggestions outside of "spend more for a more powerful motor?"
I would like to make due with my current set-up. This is my first boat and this is my first functional gas motor. This little motor seems pretty cool however, and I like the fact that the handle flips over to the other side.
Thank you for your kind suggestions, ideas and comments!
Best,
Danny
