I want to buy the service manual for my motor. Iboat has it, but there is no ID tag on the transom mount or anything on the engine itself to tell me if it is a 1970 or 1971 motor. Were there any differences between the two years this motor was produced? The exact details are

3 cylinder
2 stroke
Hydroelectric shift
Loopcharged
Forward/remote control
No PTT, manual tilt and trim only

The manuals are priced differently, just don't want to buy the wrong one and waste time and money to ship it over to Australia. Thanks guys

If there are any differences, they are minor and I don't know offhand what it might be. I just checked the wiring diagram and they are the same there. I'm wondering about the timing and carb jetting specs. If I were forced to choose, I'd go with the 1971 to get the latest specs.

Yeah might do that. it seems the hydroelectric was only made in that period.

Nope. The hydro-electric system was introduced in 1968, in the 3 cylinder 55 hp model. With the 1969 model year, the old pin drive system was phased out in the 4 cylinder models (85 & 115) and the Hydro-electric feature was added. In 1971, the 2 cylinder 50 hp model was added to the lineup, with a hydro-electric gearbox.

Hmm, how do I know for sure then that my motor is a 60hp? Up 'til now, I just believed the guy I bought it off. the old omc site has the manual for the 68 model 55hp. I don't have the inspection hatch that that year model had though.

Take a few photos of it and post here. Make sure that one of them is of the starboard side of the motor, with the hood off - we may be able to draw some conclusions from the ignition parts on it. Do include a photo of the the hood, though, because we can sometimes tell the year from the decals and/or plaques.

Also, do what TD, suggested - find the welsh plug on the rear, top portion of the motor and note the serial number. Some of the folks around here are pretty good at coming up with a model number from that.

ok heres a photo of starboard side of engine with wiring, starboard side of hood, rear of hood and top of hood. Theres a serial number on a freeze plug at the top of the engine. A stylized M with A0084452 under it.

Re: 1970/71 Johnson 60HP

If the hood on your motor is the original, you have a 1971, 60hp Johnson. This is evident because the arrangement and type of appliques on your hood are unique to that year. As a point of interest, the applique that is to the rear of the "Johnson" applique on the side of the hood, is missing a plate that says "60" and has the Johnson seahorse logo.

The model number for your engine should be one of the following:

60ES71C
60ES71E
60ESL71C
60ESL71E
