I have a Volvo 280 sterndrive. I am working on my electro-mechanical tilt system. The tilt mechanism was disconnected by previous owner. He would raise the outdrive by hand after putting the boat on the trailer. I took the tilt mechanism off the boat and checked the motor (2 wire) by hooking to a battery. Motor turns both ways when you switch around the wires. Tilt rod goes up and down also. The black box on top has only a switch inside with 3 wires and I don't see any relays. I am sure there should be 2 relays, but maybe the original owner removed them and never replaced them. I am looking for the relays and also a wiring diagram so I can get the tilt mechanism working correctly.

Thanks

Ron

Re: Volvo 280 Tilt Mechanism

Don,

Thanks for your help that was exactly what I was looking for. I saw a couple diagrams for the 280 a late model and an early model. Is there any difference between the two for the tilt mechanism?

Thanks again

Re: Volvo 280 Tilt Mechanism

The relay box is the same, just some minor wiring differences of the motor and how the power gets to the unit.

Side Note: Hopefully your relay box wires are still numbered which makes hooking up the relays easier. If not, your going to need a bottle of aspirin as well.

Re: Volvo 280 Tilt Mechanism

Don, I read your thread on the tilt/trim mechanisms. I have a boat I'm working on with a Volvo KAD44 diesel and the trim/tilt doesn't work. It's a round digital gauge with LEDs to indicate the trim position. Is there a schematic of the wiring available. There seems to be two relays at the helm and two relays on the hydraulic motor. The trim control is a small panel with tactile touch switch buttons. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a link to A 280 mechanical lift here at iboats. Make sure you order OEM relays, as the aftermarket ones won't fit under the cover.

Here is the link to the 280 OEM service manual. the wiring diagram is the lower drawing on page 165.
