I have just rescently purchased 15 hp Johnson mod J15RLCDE. This has a 5" extention making it a long shaft. Can the extention and it's components be removed with out additional parts? I've looked at parts breakdown and it appears to my eyes to be easily done.

It can and has been done by many. I'm not sure about parts but you would need to cut the water tube by the length of the extension. Also the other parts you need to look closely at are the exhaust tube that goes to the leg and the shift rod. I'm not certain if they also are extended or if the are different part numbers than the normal length leg. You can check it out. Best of luck. Rick.

The most difficult problem is that the drive shaft must be 5" shorter.

It is generally easier to find another complete gearcase of the right length; try some salvage yards or Ebay.
