I have been looking at a good number of boats to be my first one. A few have been fiberglass models that the gel coat just looks real dull. Not cracked or anything, just dull. I saw some 3m and Maquires stuff that is supposed to bring back the shine. Does this stuff really work as advertised? What goes into putting this stuff on? This will be on a bass boat sized boat, nothing huge. Thanks.

Re: Bringing back gel coat finish

Ya, a buffer, some finish rubbing compound and a couple hours and it will look like new.

There are different grades or grits of compound get "finish" as it is the finest and the easiest not to screw up, it is like liquid sand paper but 2000-2500 grit.

Oxidation is a surface thing and is easily removed.

A buffer can be had at Wal Mart for cheap, you don't want to do it by hand and compound is $7-$8.

If you have never done it start somewhere inconspicuous untill you get the hang of it, hard to screw it up really, just watch corners and body lines as you can buff through if you aren't carefull.

A body shop can do it for you for probably $100-$200.
