how to set timing 72 merc 115

hello i think the timing is off because it trys to back fire. i have put #1 piston tdc mark on fly wheel is on the marking that says max spark advance. but the rotor isn't pointing at the #1 on the dist. cap. is this right? please help. thank you glazen82.

Set the top piston to top dead center. The timing mark on the cowling support should match it, or the outer flywheel is installed incorrectly. When the carbs just start to open, the timing s/b 4* BTDC. Max timing should be 21*BTDC, with todays gasoline.
