Not a reed problem - an ignition timing problem. Sounds like your flywheel may have shorn off the key.

Pull the flywheel and inspect.

Re: 70's 9.5 evinrude

If it truly is a 1975 as you say, the it is a 9.9hp, not a 9.5. Totally different animals. The 9.9 has the "Low Tension Magneto" while the 9.5 had the good old "Universal Magneto".

There, now that I've told you all I know about this particular problem, I have to say I've never heard of such a thing. I'm guessing one set of points is way out of adjustment. Just a WAG.

It isn't reeds.

Let us know what you find.

Re: 70's 9.5 evinrude

I looked right past the 75 part of that post . . .

If it's a 9.5
I'm thinking either the flywheel really slipped and it's just barely chugging along on one cylinder way out of time. Or, there's a wiring issue under the flywheel. Or, like FR says point gap is gonzo.

I'm not familiar enough with the early 9.9s to make a call.

Last year of the 9.5 was '73 (ok now I'm second guessing myself and thinking '74 - hate when that happens). Anyway, there certainly weren't any made in 1975.

But, your problem is in the ignition for sure.

The only thing that could take a lot of time and effort with this particular problem would be if you sheered the key enough to mess up the key slot in the crankshaft. Everything else is a pretty easy fix.

Since I recently aquired a 1972 9 1/2, I have been gathering quite a bit of info as I am in the middle of "restoring" the little guy....

From what I can truely find the last year of the 9 1/2 was 1973, the 9.9 came about in 1974....
