100 hp merc no start

i have a merc 1000 i think it is a 70's model, it was running good but not putting out a charge back to the battery. like an idiot i started crossing wires to see if i could get anything to work to start sending out a charge. in doing so i crossed the ground with one of the magnito wires and the engine died. it will start for a quick secound some times but it wont stay running. did i fry my magnito or something else? any idea what a new one might run?

It's not magneto ign. it's battery CD you may have fried the ign. but first use a jumper wire and on the starboard side of the switch box jump the red to the white terminals to se if it will run heres a simple ign. test. If your not sure of what youur jumping on CD ign. it may be very costly.
