PLEASE help Boat will Not go in reverse

Ok I will start by saying this is my first boat and also my first post on here.

I have a 98 champion 181 with a 90hp merc the remote control will go into neutral and forward but is real tight and will not go into reverse BUT when i barely move the prop it will go into reverse.

im new to boats so any info or thoughts on what this could be PLEASE let me know.

It's normal with a dog type clutch in the lower unit. You either have to turn the prop by hand if the engine isn't running, or have the engine running if you want to shift gears.

With motor running it will still not go in reverse. When i have it in forward and go to neutral and try to go to reverse while the prop is still spinning it will grind real bad.

You have to shift past the grinding stage with a determined action.

Don't let it grind, just shift it to reverse then add lever slowly as throttle comes on.

You have to make your shifts fast enough to just Clunk in gear.

Yes the prop might slowly spin in neutral.
