Hey guys,

I have a 1980 8 hp johnson that I'm trying to replace the lower unit gears on.
I have removed the shaft and first gear but cannot remove the pinion gear that will allow me to remove the back gear. any suggestions, thanks

You need to pull the driveshaft out... requires removing the waterpump housing.

Thanks for your reply Chinewalker,

I've taken everything out of the foot except the pinion gear and the back gear. The pinion gear appears to be pressed in place. At least I've been
unable to remove it. There are nothing apparently holding it in place.

If everything else is out, then the forward gear should pivot and it should slide under the pinion, allowing the pinion to drop down...

Mission accomplished. I used a tool that pries off paint can lids and popped it right out. Thanks for your help :D
