I cannot guess the procedure you used or are going to use, but your method sounds like a shortcut. You always want to verify the lifter preload after any adjustment of the rockers.
Too tight and engine will not rev past 3500-4000 under load. Too loose and you get a lot of noise, less power and sooner or later unusual wear and eventual failure.
If no lifter noise, and engine revs under load to the top range, and no bent pushrods after 10 minutes or so then they must be close to spec even if accidentally.
