Hi currently looking at a 21 ft 2004 striper with an 2004 evinrude 175horsepower 2 stroke motor. Just looking for any advice on this motor. Any opinions on good motor, or known problems. It only has 130 hours. Thanks

You have a similar question posted in Boat Questions.

Which one do you want to run with?

Not E-Tec, 2007 model year was first for 175. It's a Ficht if 2004, also a DI, but not E-Tec.

Thanks for advice. Would it be smart to buy a boat with the ficht DI motor. Or should that make me keep looking?

From reading many posts here I'm glad I didn;t get a fitch.
They're not as simple to work on.

If you really like the set-up, see if seller will let you take it to dealer to see if it has the latest software and motor checked over. Make sure you run the XD50 oil and servicing is better left to a expert.

I just bought 2 old FICHT's that are WELL run-in (prob. 1200hrs per motor) but with rebuilt powerheads in the last few hundred hours. They are not that complex and if you get a service manual and read it its not a big deal. I trust myself with the manual and computer software more than most dealers... All the stuff that makes a FICHT a FICHT is pretty simple and I'd bet there are less parts in it than the carb'd equiv.

The only problem with the older ficht's is there where so may updates and voltage and part changes. The 1998 parts wont fit a 99,a 99 wont fit a 2000. The rectifier on a 98-99 model is $800.00 and the ignition module for a 98 is a $1000.00 from Brp.

The Ficht's 2001 and newer (BRP motors) were OK, but they are not held in high regard, mainly bc of some of the really bad early ones. Powerhead repair (other than strictly mechanical) require a system approach and SW familiarity. With the proper tools and mindset, they are manageable to work on and decent motors, but very different from the newer E-Tec's in many ways. The Ficht and Etec motors are clearly not your father's motors!
