Gods little reminders....

Every now and then the Good Lord does something for reasons unknown that makes me reflect on my own situation.

Dan, a friend and co-worker who I have known for about 15 years, passed away at age 45 this past Saturday. A single guy and with no family, he apparently fell in his home and struck his head. He called another co-worker about the gash in his scalp, and ended up deciding to rest on his couch rather than go to the emergency room.

Monday morning when he didn't show at the office and didn't answer his phone, a co-worker went to his home and found him dead on the couch.

So unnecessary, yet it happened. Why was he taken when in good health?

I said a prayer for Dan, and then another thanking God for keeping my family alive and well.

This whole week I am constantly remided of Dan. I was working on a project with him and every time I check out the details of the project requirements, his name is on every page.

Dan's passing reminds me how fragile we are. I have looked at my wife and kids in a different light this week. We all encounter difficult times as we pass through life, but compared to what happened to Dan, my problems look trivial. I guess its good to get a new perspective on life every now and again.

My uncle who is 65 yrs old and planned on retiring in a few months. He don't smoke, don't drink, no history of cholesterol, high blood pressure, no serious issue at all. Out of the blue, his platelets count dropped way down, came back up, then was admitted to the hospital for trouble breathing. While waiting for diagnosis he had cardiac arrest. They resuscitated him, found out his heart wasn't receiving blood caused by several blockages. He was xported to a bigger hospital via helicopter for an emergency stent procedure at midnight. Procedure went well, he had chemically induced coma, placed on a ventilator until the drug wears off. He never woke up and they determined that he had brain damage due to lack of oxygen to the brain. Doctors determined he has very little chance of waking up, he can't breath on his own, brain dead. His family decided to pull life support, passed away Tuesday afternoon. I'm going to the showing tonight and funeral tomorrow. It makes you wonder why some struggle on for years and the healthy ones gone in a flash.

Stuff happens. Sometimes very bad stuff happens to very good people, sometimes some of us continue to survive against the odds. I find no logic in it.

I guess the message is the reality that life is a very fleeting thing and can come to an end abruptly and unexpectedly or it can persevere through storm and travail.

I think as we age we try harder to ensure that the differences we make are good ones.

So very true. When the Bosslady had a reoccurrence of her cancer, we decided right then and there to move the lake. I retired and we started to get the city house ready to put on the market. Then the credit market crashed. So, our plans are on hold until Spring when we'll out the For Sale sign up and see what happens.

A good friend told me this a long time ago and this tragic post brought it right back....
