Hi there,

I have a Johnson 55hp sea horse. I believe it's a 76 model. When travelling across the water for a prolong period the engine jumps out of gear. Then, if you back off on the throttle and apply it again almost straight away its fine, until 10 mins later the symtom repeats. This occurs even at lower speeds say, 20 knots. Does anyone have any ideas? Feedback is much appreciated.

You may have a spun prop, meaning that the rubber bushing between the inner and outer hubs of the propeller is failing.

Generally the bushing would fail due to striking an object, but over time, stress and heat from the exhaust will wear the bushing to the point of failure.

You can scribe a line across the face of the propeller, using the cotter pin as a pointer. After running, if the line is no longer aligned, you would need to have the propeller re-hubbed.
