Hi- Does anyone know how much towing capacity in a vehicle I would need to tow a 17' Bayliner Capri (1987 I think). It has a 90 hp I/O motor and I think the trailer is about a 17' Shoreliner. Thanks!

I'd take a wag at 2500 min. if the hull is dry, 3k or more if it is wet. Check the NADA site for hull weights. You have to add for a trailer, gas, gear, and passengers in the tow vehicle. I believe I/O weights are included, but outboard are not.

What's your tow vehicle and how are your intended ramps like?

Dry weight should be around 1,800#, including the trailer.

Hi- Thanks for the replies. I actually figured out that my boat engine is a 2.3 L inboard. My current vechicle is a Volkswagon Diesel Jetta wagon TDI, so I don't think I could use it? thanks

We pull our 18.5' Bayliner with our Honda Pilot V6. I think it can haul up to 3,500 #. I'm no expert, but I'm not sure I would try to pull your set up with a Jetta wagon.

I'm thinking it might not quite be right but what's the rated capacity of the Jetta?

No. That car will not do it.

That Bayliner is about 1800 (Dry weight not counting fuel and fluids) .... your trailer is at least 400-500...... you will be pushing 2500 lbs.

You might have the torque (the TDI is a great motor) but you do not have the capacity.

At best your small car with a small wheelbase might pull 1500 but I would not go over 1000 lbs.

You are only asking for problems.

Go get a cheap tow vehicle like a truck and park the Jetta.

The '89 Bayliner brochure (only one I have, OP's boat should be similar) lists the dry weight as just under 1,800#, but the heading on the specifications table states that it applies to the boat with the trailer and standard motor. Not sure if that's true, but a truck scale is the only way to know for sure.
