evinrude motor question

Hello all, i was searching the web and stumbled across this site. i have a question about an old boat motor i have. i was wondering if anyone could tell me the model year and any other info from the serial number. the serial number is 25028-09165. i think it is a 35 horse motor. i would like to get it running i am getting tired of fishing from the bank so much, seams like the good spots aint producing fish like they used to. seams like the last time i had it on the water (several years ago) it was popping out of gear as i went across the lake, anyone know what might be causing this? well i look forward to posting with you guys.

the clutch dog in the lower unit is gone, and will get worse. if you can find a good one it will be expensive. other than that $200-250 will make it run like new, if it has good compression.

thanks for the reply. i am very boat motor illeterate and i have no idea what a clutch dog is but i do have a johnson javelin 35 horse motor i might be able to get a dog from if i knew what i was looking for. the evinrude is in much better condition but the clutch dog in the johnson may be o.k. if they will interchange.

If you have a 35 hp Javelin then forget the Evinrude. The 1957 "Golden" Javelin 35 hp is a very special motor and actually has a little monetary value, unlike your Evinrude. However, they are mechanically identical. So you can just put the Javelin lower unit on your Evinrude or use your Evinrude for parts to restore the Javelin. Post the Javelin model number so we know that is for sure what you have. A 35 hp Javelin is gold coloured and has chrome trim.

The clutch dog is the shift clutch. Its part number 28 in the attached diagram.

Geesh Wayne, why did you have to go and tell him that! I was just about to offer him 100 bucks for his Javelin since that Evinrude is much better! lol

sorry it taken so long but its been very cold here lately and i have been busy, but i finally got the numbers off of that johnson. the model # is RJE 19 M and the serial # is1649497. thanks for any input anyone can give.

You have a 1957 Johnson Javelin 35 hp.

Its always cold here this time of year. I'm busier with snowmachines than outboards.

thanks for the input. i guess from your guys input i should use the evinrude to restore the johnson. but the reason i quit using it is i wanted to remove the steering system out of this old fiberglass boat and i had to find a control tiller for the hand throtle and steering ( i think thats what it is called) i found one but the motor looked so good it was on i bought the whole thing. the johnson is an electric start but i dont think that is original is it? it ran fine before i tore out the steering so i guess i just need to exchange a fewparts and give her a try. you guys mentioned it was a special motor any specific reason? thanks for all the help. hopefully i will be fishing from my boat come this spring.

Shop around, you should be able to replace either clutch dog on those motors for less than $100. Make sure the shift lever is adjusted properly and check the gear faces, where they engage the clutch dog...sometimes the gear faces are as worn as the worn-out clutch dog; from people shifting slowly/grinding into gear. Best case scenario is to shift quickly and completely when the motor is throttle to shift speed range.

The Javelin was a trim package. The cowl should be gold with special chrome trim and a cover over the front. The standard issue Johnson of that year is red (Holiday Bronze) and white (cream) with no chrome or front cover. It is a desirable motor for old boats. It came with electric start from the factory. That's what the "E" in your model number means.

You can use either motor. They belong to you. It just seems a waste of a good Javelin not to use it. You can easily put the tiller handle on the Johnson. Of course, as a collector I'd propbably just buy another good used lower unit for the Evinrude and have two running motors.
