I have 1995 evinrude 115 model e115tleor. I need a new powerhead but am confused by the shop manual as to wether I have a 60 looper or a 90 crossflow. As far as I can tell its a 90, but when I look at the gear case it seems to be a 60 degree. Are the upper and lower units just completely different units and dont have to be match with each other ie a 60 with a 60 or a 90 with a 90? Or is it that each units degree is no correlation with each other.

Re: 60 Or A 90 Crossflow?

The difference between looper and crossflow has to do with the way the fuel is introduced into & across the cylinder.

A Crossflow has a wedge shape on the top of the pistons.. the incoming mixture gets deflected by that wedge upwards and pushes the exhaust gasses out.

A Looper achieves the same thing without the wedge.. uses the ports to "flow" the new mixture to the top of the head.. in a "loop" as it were.

90* vs 60* has to do with the positioning of the cylinders in relation to the crank centerline. The 60* powerhead is narrower.

The 90 & 115 loopers are 60* blocks. V4 & V6 crossflows have always been 90* blocks(yours). Things change a bit with the E tecs.

The model number says yours is a 90 degree crossflow engine. Bubble back exhaust.

Thanks, that is what I figured by the piston shape and location of the thermostates. But what about the lower unit? for I believe it is a 60 degree because the screens are in side and the anode placement is above and on the aft portion of the cavatation plate. Attached is pic of lower unit if it helps. IMG_1423.jpg

Thanks for your replies but I think I'm going to repower with a newly rebuilt 98 90hp evinrude for 1600. It will be cheaper than rebuilding this one.

I believe you have the correct crossflow lower unit on the engine. On a crossflow, the screens should be on the inside. The loopers are on the outside. The loopers have a more swept skeg, yours does not appear that way.
