Default 1973 Evinrude 9.5 Aftermarket Fuel Pump

Hi: I've read several posts on the 9.5 fuel pump and just want to make sure I'm clear on this. Several folks implied that they were using the Sierra 18-7350 fuel pump on the 9.5 Evinrude engines?? I called Sierra before I read the postings and they said it wouldn't work. Since BRP says the 388833 replaces the original 382224 and Sierra says the 18-7350 replaces the 388833, I didn't understand why it wouldn't work.The sierra pump is a bunch less expensive than the BRP but I don't want to buy a pump that won't work.
Thanks for any assistance to this newbie.

i don't know where you found 18-7350 is compatable with 388833. not at iboats.com or at ishopmarine.com.

Sierra 18-7350 Fuel Pump
# Screws not included For: 6/8/9.9/15 HP 1992 and older rope start models
# Replaces OEM part #

* OMC 397839
* OMC 397274
* OMC 395091
* OMC 391638

every place i checked say there is not an aftermarket part for 388833.

not even the Sierra site shows a replacement http://ww2.sierramarine.com/sierra/c...esearch=382224

Thanks for your reply. You are quite correct and this is what is confusing me. I skipped a step in explaining my research. The 388833 is also the pump for the 80's 8 hp Evinrude. The Sierra 18-7350 replaces the 388833 in the 8hp it seems, so I'm not sure why it wouldn't replace it in the 9.5hp. At least one other forum poster mentioned using the Sierra on their 9.5.

The potential problem lies in the direction that the fittings point. You don't have a lot of options under that tight 9.5 hood. BUT the good thing is that the 18-7350 can be assembled in a number of different positions. You will need the rebuilding kit instructions to change the positions. I believe they have been posted here before. You must have everything oriented correctly and the little spring in the right cavitie. If you can get it in there, it will work.
