I have a minnkota edge 55lb 12v foot controlled trolling motor. Its only a couple of months old.The manual states that it's only a 12v motor. What would it hurt to run it on 24v to get a little more power? It's pulling an 18' bumblebee bass boat with a 150 evinrude.

Why do you suppose it's called a 12V only motor?? If it were able to run on 24 volts it would be called a 24 volt motor. But to answer your question -- certainly it will run on 24 volts -- just not very long.

It should be easy enough to reconfigure your wireing (at the batteries) to show 12V at the trolling motor. You just want to get your batteries wired in parallel vs series.

Obtaining 12V is apparently not the problem here. He is simply unhappy about the performance from that 12V motor and wants to run it on 24V.

Yes, it would hurt the motor. As Silvertip said, it will run for a very short time on 24 volts. It may also result in a fire when you overload the wires. Here are a couple of ideas to try. Are the conections all clean? If not, clean them up. Do any of the crimps get hot? If so, re-do them. How long are the wires and how large? Check the recomendations. If the wire is too long or too small, that will result in a problem. Check the archives and someone should have some recomendations. Better yet, what are the manufacturers recomendations? Follow them. Finally, is the battery really a good battery? A shorted cell or a generally bad battery will result in poor performance. Fix the real problem. If the motor is really the issue (not bad, just too small), then sell it on Craigslist and get a more powerful motor.

Absolutely DO NOT operate a 12v motor on 24 volts. It is dangerous and can start a fire. DO NOT do this.
