how do I test for spark?

The starter rope is in the cover..how do I test to see if there is spark to the plug...Mercury 4.5

In most cases you can remove the spark plug and spin the engine with the palms of you hands on the flywheel and if that don't work wrap a rope around the flywheel.

You can buy a cheap inline spark tester or timing light at any automotove store. Then just insert it between the plug and plug wire and PULL. Repeat for each cyl. You'll visually see the spark if it's there. ( Also a good tool to see if you have spark break-up at different RPM's.)
