Re: 115hp evinrude outboard

All engines will run fine on the hose. It's when they are level in the water that the problems show up. Check the spark to each of the cylinders. Put an inductive timing light on each plug wire and see if you get strong, constant flashes from the gun. See if all the plugs look the same. Check to see if any plugs are wet, indicating they are getting fuel, but not firing. While you are checking it out, a compression check is always the best place to start, as it creates a baseline of general engine health before you get into specifics.

that is the problem with shops that only hose or tank test. there is not any back pressure on the exhaust, they set the idle speed too low. thus the motor will not run when the lower unit is submerged.

A motor running on half of its cylinders will sound ok hooked to the hose.
Its the back pressure when in the water that shows problems.
What all did the service include? Tune up,new spark plugs?
Were the compression numbers fairly even? It could also be a fuel delivery problem...

Its your statement that she dies when you put her in gear that leads me to the following ideas.

When were the carbs last rebuilt? May be time for a bath and rebuild. Check to see if the timer base (starboard side, under the edge of the flywheel, linked to the throttle lever) moves smoothly without sticking when you advance the throttle.

Take the airbox cover off & observe whether the throttle plates are parallel.

Also, the timer base should start it's travel before the throttle plates start to open, otherwise the old girl will puke when you give her the throttle.

It could also be a wiring problem; what is the year or model number?
