Default 1995 Mercury 40 hp 4 cylinder,Needs More H.P.

Well,I have a 1995 Bass Tracker Pro Deep V-17.It has a 40 hp Mercury outboard.Engine runs perfectly, gets great gas milage, with 2 guys and fishing equiptment and an ice chest full of drinks, tops out at about 25 mph.Add another guy and his stuff and you are down to about 18 mph. That is at about 4500 rpm.Can I do anything to get more power out of it,and go a little faster,or do I have to repower to the rated 90 hp,or something close.New prop,or anything.

Hi,

sorry but there's nothing as magical HP gain. I had the exact same boat as yours, except it's a 1993 and with a Merc 60hp 3 cyl. on it. Most of the time it's Ok but, sometimes, when we're 3 aboard, i wish i had at least a 75, wich was around the magical number (80% of the max HP rating) for quick holeshot without lugging.

With a 60, i know i'm a bit underpowered, but with a 40, you can't expect more.

Does it fill your needs right, most of the time? If there's only 2-3 times a year you wish you had more power, it doesn't make sense to spend 5000$+ (including your trade-off) for that, unless money is no object.

Simply ask yourself: did these few times i wish i had more power worth that? It's your call...

Well, the whole deal is that I am in an aluminum boat only bass tournament every month.Getting back for the weigh in can get kinda close sometimes. The lakes here in Arizona have filled up so much with all the rain and snow that falls in the winter now.Lakes that are real big get us going out and away farther and farther.Other then that,it is not speed. The boat fills all my needs as it is.There are so many deals out there.Well, they look like great deals.I think that with that kind of money involved, the 40 will do just fine. Thanks,at least you guys got me thinking in a better way.By the way, this boat is the s--t.I love it.
