2004 merc steering question???

I have a 2004 75hp merc outboard on my 170cc sea pro that the steering has seized up on me. It appears to be siezed inside the tilt tube. I was trying to free it up until the steering cable come apart :mad: (the plastic outer insulator pulled out of the crimped sleeve) under the console at the steering box. I assume I will have to replace the whole assembly now but I dont know how to disconnect it from the engine?? I took the big nut that attaches the cable to the motor loose, but how does the rod that runs up inside the tilt tube come apart?? Do I have to get the shaft unsiezed and then the whole thing will slide out ??? I greatly appreciate any advice.

The steering cable passes all the way through the tilt tube and the link on the other end that actually steers the motor is attached to it with a single nut. Disconnect the link. If the steering is seized up in the tilt tube, DO NOT hammer on the end of the cable as it will mushroom and won't fit back through the tube. Liberal doses of PB Blaster will loosen it.. You didn't say where the the steering is tight. It may be the motor pivot and not in the cable at all. Disconnecting the steering link should allow the motor to pivot easily. You need a new cable.

Thanks alot, I wasnt sure how that came apart. It is siezed in the pivot tube. So I gotta get that free to get the cable out. The motor rotates easily with the linkage disconnected. Can I replace just the cable? The helm assy. housing says that it should not be diassembeled. So does that mean I have to replace the whole thing?

Jerry, A lot of steering systems do not have replacemnt parts, due to liability. You may therefore need to replace the whole thing. The good news is that the cable is usually 80% of the cost anyway.

You can try some heat on the tilt tube and rock the cable end with a pipe wench to work it loose. If you can rock it at all, it will usually loosen up with some patience and penetrating oil. Try not to catch the motor on fire with the torch.....
