Yeah, I was the one asking about a toon (even bought the beginings of one) but my wife thought about it a lot and has decided that while she likes them (our friends have a couple) its not what she would really like. We looked at a crusier (22') and it mostly looked, cramped is the word I would use.

I know there are all sorts of considerations but my basic ones are.

She and I can spend a comfortable weekend once or twice a month at the lake.

Must have a passenger rating of 8 or more for family "things".

Maybe take a week or two trip once a year by water.

Should be capable of comfortable crusing speed without working the engine(s) to death. Prefer gasoline.

So with these things in mind, what is a realistic size and configuration do you think I should be looking at? Suggestions on manufactures?

I don't mind an older boat in need of work/restoration.

Yeah deck boat sounds like a good fit for your needs. One question though, on your week or two trip, are you going to be living on the boat? I think I've seen deck boats that have cabins too, but don't quote me ;). A boat like that would probably be at least in the mid twenties length-wise. If you don't mind a small project you can probably find a pretty good deal in this economy. Good luck.

So with these things in mind, what is a realistic size and configuration do you think I should be looking at?

-"She and I can spend a COMFORTABLE weekend once or twice a month at the lake."
-"Must have a passenger rating of 8 or more for family "things"."
-"Maybe take a week or two trip once a year BY WATER."
-"Should be capable of comfortable crusing speed without working the engine(s) to death. Prefer gasoline."

These things make me think of only 2 types of boat- a 30'+ houseboat or a 34'+ sedan bridge. My reasons?
- to be truly "comfortable", a separate, full size bedroom is a must, and so is a real bathroom.
- 8+ passanger rating- that's a big payload.
- He says "by water" so I'll assume he intends to live aboard during his trip.
- a "comfortable cruising speed" doesn't necessarily mean fast. Most houseboats and sedan bridge boats will achieve plane. This one really depends on the body of water- is it generally calm or rough?

If money's no object, then I think a nice used Bluewater Yacht fits all his requirements to a T! Here's an example: http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/199...al-Cruiser-1843527/Knoxville/TN/United-States

the 30 is hard to trailer, also OMC, has been out of business 10 years, so parts are not being made. if you want to tow, i would not go over 26ft.

Re: (Wives!) Need thoughts on a cruiser...

how comfortable are you with towing bubba?

i regularly haul a fully loaded 28 foot cargo trailer up and down our mountain passes.....i think i would be comfortable towing a 28-30 footer....BUT........i haven't had one that big on the back yet so i dont know how they feel....if you are not sure about towing somthing that big.....then look at a slip and having it moved for you when you do the river thing.

for true comfort.....wifey would be looking at a stateroom.....galley and head/shower........now your talking twins......and a real beam.......thats a slip boat bud.

but you can find them cheap.......if i kick my heels three times.....i might be able to help with the proj...:D :D :D
