hi guys i have a 1977 850hp mercury that i,m about to remove the lower unit to replace the water pump but to disconnect the shift rod is the roll pin in the shift connector link under the bottom carb the only way to remove or ?

it has spline coulper on the shift shaft inside the lower unit,, which should slide apart as the lower down the lower unit,,, you need a manuel to give you step by step instructions,,, cheaper than messing it up and getting someone else to fix

Its an 85hp merc they called it an 850 as what is on the decal on side of engine cowl

so put it on a 12ft alum. boat and I'll be happy!!!:p
