E-choke solenoid- '96 johnson 60hp ELEDR

Anyone have suggestions on how to get some lifespan out of the poorly
engineered red plastic valve stem on the choke solenoid, that keeps cracking
and spewing gas. I have two of the 60s powering my houseboat at Lake
Powell, UT, which is 500 mi from home in CO. and the POS keep cracking and
I can't keep them running and leave the helm ( need to keep choking with
toggle switch). They seem to have no lifespan and crack just sitting between
trips. Very few actual run hours. Thanks for any help. B

why do you have to choke with the lever, you should be able to just push the key in to activate, if it doesn't do it you have an electrical problem to the solenoid. either bad ignition switch, or more common corroded connection at primer solenoid. get the switch working and that will extend the life. or just install a push button for each solenoid.

there should be no reason to mess with the red lever, except to fog the motor for winterizing, on to manually rope start the motor if battery is dead.

TD, the problem is not the switching or the solenoid not working,because
there is a toggle switch ( normally open ) for each motor, instead of a push
the key. The problem is that I can't keep running without using the choke to
refresh the RPMs every time the motor starts to die, which is only a few
seconds between having to refresh with the choke, and then gas starts
spewing from a crack where the air stem(brass) goes into the cheap plastic
valve stem of the solenoid. WIH is that air valve for anyway? That seems like
an awfully cheap way to engineer a part on what is purported to be an almost
bulletproof motor. I can keep the motors running one at a time by hitting the
choke toggle when R's start to go down,and have run both separately for 10
min. or longer (enough to warm up without the choke, normally, but won't
keep idleing without it) Then every time I hit choke, gas starts pulsing out of

sounds like you have carb issues, maybe a good clean/rebuild would help..........if they wont idle when warmed up without the choke.

how long does it sit between uses?

do you use a fuel stabilizer?

how long has it been doing this?

the shrader valve is used to fog the engine, during winterization. until, the leaking is fixed you cannot trouble shoot anything else. the reason is the motor is loosing fuel pressure with the leaks. David has a very good point. i have owned numerous motors with the primer solenoids, only had 2 problems, dirty contact, and ignition switch going bad, no actual problem with the primer solenoid.

totally agree with your troubleshooting theory. My real question is -- has
anyone else had problems with that little POS red plastic valve stem????
That little air valve stem just presses in with a neoprene "O" ring gasket,
but all four of them that I have seen, have cracked inside the gasket, and
leaks. I think at this point, they would run if those weren't cracked. READ :

like i said i have had many Johnson/Evinrude motors, as i buy and sell them, with the primers on them, i have never had a problem with them. from 1988-2006 motors. i have no idea what is happening to yours. as i said before there is not reason to touch them, other than the prementioned times.
