I purchased a 15hp johnson electric start from a neighbor that occasionally popped out of gear I disassembled the lower unit and replaced the thrust bearing and washers item #s 0336296 and 0388000 (everything else was in good condition)and reassembled the gearcase with the carrier tightened up against the housing there was more endplay than I was comfortable with but being as that was the way it was I put it in service and have about 10hrs on it Yesterday I heard loud clunk like I hit something. the motor continued to work fine. I am wondering (and concerned) if the endplay could be the cause. The question is can I add a shim the correct this and if so how do I do it Thanks

When you heard the "clunk," did it pop out of gear?

Also, you may want to drain the lube oil to see if there is any metal in the lube. You may have broken a tooth?
