89 Evinrude XP200

Hi all, I have a 89 Evinrude XP200 that has engine damage, (Started knocking then locked up, even though oil tank was full and filter in tank been changed a few months ago).

I cant decide to have it rebuilt or look for another boat. I found a guy that has a 99 Evirude 225 that hit a rock and damaged his lower end, My lower end is in good shape, (change the oil twice a year) on my boat and the boat is in good shape also. Just needs to be detailed and buffed out.

But, anyway...... just looking at the lower ends they look exactly the same and I was wondering if they are interchangeable. Does anyone know?? The motors appear to have the same shaft length (20in ????? I think)

My motor will start and run but it is still knocking on one cylinder, I pulled the spark plug out of the cylinder and it appears to have metal melted to it and the gap appears smaller.(would take a pic but camera battery dead and dont have any more batteries right now)

Is there a typical price that something like that runs to repair? Is it typicaly a bearing on the crankshaft that went out? and/or wrist pins? Any help you guys can give would be appreciated.

I think the lowers will interchange but i'll let one of the pros answer that.
The melted metal on the piston could be from a broken ring or part of the piston skirt..
Its possible to replace just one piston if the block is not scored very bad.
A full rebuild will be expensive.

The lowers will interchange. However, the 89 driveshaft has an O ring at the top. The 99 has the O ring in the bottom of the crank. If you use the 89 lower just grease the splines and don't use the O ring. You'll be good to go.

If you have melted aluminum on the plug you probably had a preignition / detonantion issue. Could be as simple as the wrong spark plug. If it were mine I'd pull the head and have a look. You're probably looking at a rebuild in any case.
