oceanpro 150 power pack problems

hello all,
if anyone could help, this would be great.
the power pack (part no. 584910 CD6AOL61)on my motor (mod no. HE150EXEOM) recently stopped firing on the port side 3 cylinders. I have checked the shift switch circuit (o/b), eng.temp switches (t), cold start (w/b), 12v + feed (y/r) and ign kill (b/y), put new plugs QL78YC and all is fine. So i bought a new power pack, sierra brand, which gave about 2 hours running then the same 3 port cylinders stopped firing again. The boat has twin motors so i can swap around components to test, as the other motor is perfect, although, i am too scared to swap over the good power pack. I have put both damaged power packs on the good motor, and both units wont fire the 3 port side cylinders. Could the stator cause the power pack damage like this, or could a coil send a signal back to the pack and damage it? On the first (original) damaged pack, I removed the circuit board from the green soft gel filler, and can clearly see and smell a burnt track on the circuit board right next to the port side 3 primary coil wires.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think you'll need their peak reading v meter to test the stator coils.

a bit more info, the motor is 1995.
charge coil resistance 540-541 ohms (should be 450-600 ohms)
charge coil voltage 155-158v (should be 150v or more)
charge coil to engine ground 10.6v - 22.0v
power coil resistance 56.6 ohms (should be 50-60 ohms)
power coil voltage 54.1v (should be 12v or more)
power coil to engine ground 4.8 - 5.2v
all 6 coils read 290ohms between primary and secondary terminals (should be 225-325ohms)
ignition leads read 537 - 603 ohms

i only have not checked the regulator / rectifier...tommorow

When I did all those tests I found no stator problem , changed the PP and that was the end of it. I had the same symptom, port side was dead.
Mine is a 94 J150.

Have you cleaned all power connections starting at the battery?

You tested the shift switch, have you tried disconnecting it then spark test the port side?

Disconnect the red plug to remove the ignition switch from the circuit?
A bad ignition switch can play havoc.

I'm under the impression the rectifier doesn't have anything to do with the ignition circuit.

I just read something posted by Ezeke, re' the ignition switch causing damage to the powerpack,

if any voltage reaches the pack via the black and yellow wire at the switch it will kill the pack.

I had a loose ignition switch that caused problems, a meter across the steering wheel and shifter handle showed high voltage ( and pain), turned out the ignition switch was loose and rotating in its bezel.

Just somethin else to check out.

I would highly recommend the CDI brand packs. They are digital amd much improved over the others, even OE.

hey Jonesg, you are a champion.
i put my meter across the earth terminal and the black/yellow terminal on the rear of the key switch, and when slightly twisting the black/yellow, i got 2volts, twist a bit more, got 9volts.
I am putting in a N/C 12v relay, so this cant possibly happen again on both motors.
