I am getting ready to repaint motor.I have checked through some of the older posts on this topic.I know how to do this project, sand, prime etc.My question is is sandpaper what grits to start with and finish. The lower unit is actually not bad,a few minor spots to prep.Motor cover is chipped and worn on top edges, but not anything to fill or patch, just sand smooth etc.Just need to know grit, wet or dry and all that.
Thanks John....

Ayuh,...

For purely surface preping, I use 180 or 220 on a power sander....
'ell,.. For that matter,.. 1 of those green kitchen scrubby pads will work on uneven surfaces...

For Color Sanding the finish coat, if you think it needs it, I go with 600 Wet or higher...

Kind of thought it would be in that range somewhere. How bout a variable speed orbital sander.Do you use regular paper or auto or does it matter?
Thanks John

Ayuh,....

Sandpaper is Sandpaper....

Some of it holds up abit better,+ some of it Doesn't like Water....

I guess the choice is Your's...

I use an orbital with 220 grit, then hand sand with 500.
Primer, then go over it with 500 again.Wipe it down with Acetone then shoot the color.
I used the Moeller color match spray engine paint. It turned out very nice.
Be sure to use a matching primer brand.
Any bare metal go with a light coat of Zinc Chromate primer.
