Mine is manual start and just has the charge coil under the flywheel with the 2 ignition coils on the outside. Has points.

What are my options as far as switching to some sort of electronic ignition. I know nothing about it, but I was curious.

How does it work? and do you not have to set timing?

also, is it economical to do the switch? If there is a source I can find information on this, I would appreciate it.

thanks

Like, TD, I trust magnetos far more than "electronic" ignition in small outboards. As long as the ignition coils are good, the points are clean and properly set and the condensers are okay you have a better system.

you'd need a flywheel, stator, timer base, powerpack -- you'd spend more than the value of your motor........

From a practical standpoint, the main difference is that spark is triggered by magnets passing over sensors in the timer base.

You still have to set the timing.

To find more on the theory of operation, just google "capacitor discharge ignition".
