Default Replacing wooden transom in aluminum boat

I've been told by my boat mechanic not to seal the new wood I'm putting in the transom of my 18' Starcraft aluminum. He says leave it bare toward the bilge so that the wood can "breathe".
I'm still tempted to seal the whole thing in resin and lay in a bed of silicone sealer along the bottom and sides.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks!!

Welcome to iboats!!!

Silicone belongs in a fishtank and really has no use on a boat! It will FAIL.

read this forum..... dry your marine plywood and seal it up completely.

"He says leave it bare toward the bilge so that the wood can "breathe"" total carp. atleast seal it with 3 coats of oil based paint, it not glass.

Thanks for the replies & suggestions. This project went great, and I really didn't run in to anything I couldn't handle.
Thanks for the posts directing me to other folks who've done this before!
